Matt Pullin's chess videos. Live blitz, game analysis, opening theory, etc.
Name: Matt
Age: 26
I am not a grandmaster... just a USCF Expert rated 2022. I have been playing chess for about 10 years. I try to make my chess videos as interesting as possible. I hope you will learn something.

The number of users creating chess videos on YouTube has increased dramatically since I started making these. If you, too, want to make chess videos, you will need:

1) good material
2) a screen capture program (I use CamStudio)
3) a chess program (I've used WinBoard and PGNmentor, but ChessBase9 works wonders and also helps you organize your thoughts beforehand)
4) a microphone (I got mine at Radio Shack for 30 bucks)
5) patience. It takes me about 30 min to make a 10 min video because I don't have any video editing software.
6) it helps to have a computer engine to analyze your content such as Fritz or Crafty. If you make a tactical mistake in your video, the viewers here will eat you alive, even if you apologize for it in the description. Better to re-shoot the video in that case.

In chess literature, games get published all the time without the consent of one or both players, that is a fact of life. Also, the analysis in my videos is by no means objective and sometimes isn't even computer checked. Ultimately what I'm presenting are my thoughts, not any sort of definitive guide on how to play a position.

If you want to leave a comment on one of my videos, and you have a question about a specific line I show, include a time, or a move order, in your comment. Otherwise I will just delete your comment rather than hunt through the video and try to figure out what you're talking about. Also, I won't answer any questions that are answered on my user page.

All comments should have to do with the content presented and should never put down me or anyone else that commented before you. Don't be a jerk.

See ya,

regarding the caro-kann, krakkaskak plays the caro in some of his live blitz videos, these might be helpful.

also, in addition to the lines that greencastleblock lists below, you must also be prepared for the fantasy variation - 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3. i've been seeing this a lot more often in blitz games lately.

I don't know much about the Caro-Kann. I played it once in high school.

I'd say the main lines you need to be ready for are:
- The Fischer style exchange variation with exd5,Bd3,c3,Bf4,h3,Nf3
- The Panov-Botvinnik 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4 (or 2.c4 which can lead to the same thing)
- The Advance Variation 3.e5. I like 3...h5 for Black here but nothing wrong with the classic 3...Bf5.
- The Blackmar-Deimer gambit 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.f3, not very good for White but very popular at club level, you need to have an answer.
- The mainline 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4, decide now whether you want to play 4...Nd7 or 4...Nf6 or 4...Bf5 and study one of these.

Hope that helps.

Seriously, your explanation is MUCH more comprehensible than some chess authors, even certain GMs who I shall not name -- Good players need not necessarily be good teachers, I'd say.

In fact I'll been encouraging members of my recreational chess club to learn from your videos.

You've emerged as my "chess hero" now! =)

Good luck in your chess career, as well as all your future adventures in life.

Yours sincerely

Y.J.
